It is a tremendous book, a balm to my heart, and a piercing cry for those of us left alone to die. The words imbued in these pages are raw, honest, and painful truths of the immense pain writhing within us - the sick, the disabled, and the unique and magnificent bodies that denounce your myopic, ableist views of us. You shove us in convenient boxes of feel-good, heteronormative, white, inspirational p*rn to feel happier on a bad day; if we, the crawling, rolling, limping dead, can do it, then so you! Of course!
Disabled people do not exist to inspire you. We exist and live in isolation, desolation, and a hell unimaginable to most. The part that remains ignored is that you, too, will become chronically ill and or disabled at some point in your life. If you desperately want to pay attention to our pain, I suggest you start by respecting us. Ask us if there’s anything you can do or not do to help. Be open, be honest, and be kind.
